WP1

Project management and coordination

WP1 ensures that NitroScope runs smoothly and delivers on its objectives. It covers day-to-day coordination, governance and risk management, as well as ethics, gender balance and quality assurance. WP1 also oversees data, IPR and innovation management so that all results are handled responsibly and in line with EU requirements.

WP2

N-flux sensing strategy definition

WP2 defines how NitroScope will monitor nitrogen across diverse European conditions. It compiles existing field data on nitrogen management, designs the overall data strategy, and develops and calibrates advanced sensors for dissolved nitrogen and N₂O. This Work Package delivers harmonised guidelines and sensing systems that underpin all data collection activities in the project.

WP3

Data collection and N management in different pedo-climatic zones

WP3 coordinates NitroScope’s network of 125 monitoring sites and leads the collection of high-quality data across more than 10 pedo-climatic regions. It implements and tests improved nitrogen management and conservation strategies at pilot sites, while generating the core datasets on N fluxes, N losses and nitrogen use efficiency that feed the project’s modelling and assessment work.

WP4

Improving adoption of N-management and conservation strategies

WP4 focuses on people and practice. It maps and engages key stakeholders, especially farmers, land managers and decision-makers, and evaluates the agronomic, socio-economic and environmental performance of the strategies tested in NitroScope. By identifying barriers and enablers of adoption and developing best practices for communication and training, WP4 helps ensure that project solutions are taken up in the real world.

WP5

Optimization and implementation of N-models for mitigation strategies

WP5 develops NitroScope’s modelling backbone. It builds a cloud-based architecture and a calibrated ensemble of process-based and machine-learning models that integrate field data, sensor outputs and remote sensing information. These models support site-specific nitrogen management, variable rate fertilisation and the development of two farm-management add-ons that translate complex simulations into actionable advice.

WP6

EU N budget estimation and scenario analysis

WP6 scales up from fields to countries and to Europe as a whole. Using NitroScope data and models, it computes national and EU-wide nitrogen budgets, quantifies uncertainties and applies material flow analysis to identify key stocks and flows. It then explores land-use and climate change scenarios, providing maps and indicators that support policy and planning for more sustainable nitrogen use.

WP7

Communication, dissemination and exploitation

WP7 builds and promotes the NitroScope brand, manages all communication and dissemination activities and drives collaboration with other EU initiatives, including the Soil Mission. It also develops the exploitation and sustainability strategy, an open repository of N-flux data and NitroScope add-ons, and policy recommendations for EU and national decision-makers, with the goal to maximise the project’s impact beyond its lifetime.
