Its competitive advantages are internationality, the quality of teaching and research, and diversity. The university, re-opened as the Estonian-language University of Tartu in 1919, at the beginning of the Republic of Estonia, laid the foundations for Estonian-language higher education and created a community of national intellectuals, who have a significant role in the development of the Estonian state, society and culture.
Role in the project
The University of Tartu contributes to NitroScope through its expertise in soil science, nitrogen cycling and environmental monitoring in nemoral and northern European conditions. Within WP3, the University supports data collection at regional and intensive monitoring sites, providing harmonised datasets on soil nitrogen dynamics, greenhouse gas emissions and key environmental drivers.
In addition, the University of Tartu contributes to the analysis and interpretation of nitrogen flux data, supporting model calibration and cross-regional comparisons. Its work helps strengthen the representation of cool-temperate agroecosystems in NitroScope’s modelling framework and European nitrogen budget assessments.
