About

Founded in 1911, the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (CIÊNCIAS ULisboa) is a leading European institution in education and scientific research. With over 6,000 students, 650 academics and researchers, and 13 research centres, it combines a strong scientific tradition with international excellence and a 98% graduate employability rate. Since moving to its Campo Grande campus in 1985, CIÊNCIAS has continued a legacy closely linked to the historic University of Lisbon.

CIÊNCIAS extends its activities beyond Lisbon through a field station in Serra de Grândola, a maritime laboratory in Cascais, and active involvement in major scientific and innovation initiatives, including the Natural History and Science Museum, the Lisbon Astronomical Observatory, and the Tec Labs incubator. Guided by the motto “What we do not know today, we will know tomorrow,” CIÊNCIAS continues to advance scientific knowledge and innovation.

Role in the project

CIÊNCIAS contributes to NitroScope through its expertise in environmental sciences, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem monitoring, with a strong focus on Mediterranean and Lusitanean contexts. Within WP3, the faculty supports data collection at regional and intensive monitoring sites in Portugal, providing high-quality measurements of soil properties, nitrogen dynamics and greenhouse gas fluxes.

CIÊNCIAS ULisboa also contributes to the analysis and interpretation of nitrogen flux data, supporting the integration of field observations with modelling and remote sensing activities. Its involvement strengthens NitroScope’s capacity to understand nitrogen behaviour across heterogeneous landscapes and to upscale results to regional and European levels.
